How do inaccurate credit reporting instances occur, and why must you correct them?
If you share your name with another person, their information likely found its way into your credit report or vice-versa. Despite being an error, it can prove to be detrimental to your ability to secure a loan. It is your responsibility to approach the appropriate credit agencies and ask for revisions and corrections.
How to resolve errors
Follow the steps below to set things right in your credit report:
Contact the pertinent credit-reporting agency
Send a dispute letter to the relevant credit-reporting agency outlining the erroneous information. Use registered mail. You need to include proof of identity and evidence to support your claims.
Agencies must investigate within 30 days. If you do not receive a response, send another letter.
Review the response
Once the agency completes its investigation, it will get back to you with written results. If it makes a change, you will receive a copy of the report as well. On the contrary, the information will remain unchanged. Review the results, and if you are dissatisfied, communicate directly with the creditor.
Provide a consumer statement
If the problem persists, you can explain your position in a written document of up to 100 words. It is known as a consumer statement. Your credit report will reflect it as well.
You must ask for the inclusion of positive information on your credit report too. It will help you gain the trust of lenders. If you fail to receive any response despite contacting the agencies frequently, you can notify the FTC.Read more →
